William Walter Ellis was orphaned at an early age and was raised by the
Payne family. At 3 1/2 years of age, Bill went to live with the William N. Payne
family. Mr. Payne (of Payne, Arkansas) and a widowed Mrs. Amanda Clark had
adjoining farms. They both had grown children, and they married to merge
their farms. Then they had a son of their own. The Paynes took in Bill
Ellis, and he performed chores and served as a playmate for their own son.
When they passed away, they did not leave any of their assets to him. Bill
Ellis's foster brother was called Doc Payne.
The 13th U.S. Census dated 8 May 1910, Craighead County, Lake City township,
Arkansas, lists the following:
William N. Payne (head of household), 50 years old, second marriage; born in
Arkansas
Amanda J. Payne (wife); born in Arkansas
Joe C. Payne (son) 14 years old; born in Arkansas
Olsie Clark (stepson) 16 years old; born in Arkansas
William Ellis (orphan boy) 14 years old; born in Arkansas; parents born in
U.S.
The 1920 Census for Lake City, Arkansas, states that he was born in
Missouri. William and his family is listed in the 1920 Arkansas Census.
Elmo is the only child listed. All of the others are believed to have been
born after 1920. William listed his parents birthplace as the "U.S."
Bill was a hard worker. He farmed, he owned more than one service station
where he worked as a mechanic, he picked cotton in the fall, he worked in
rural electrification, and he worked for 15 cents an hour at the Pierce
Williams Fruit Basket Factory in Jonesboro. In his later years, he mowed
grass for several families, and he could be seen walking around town,
pushing his lawn mower.
