Dennis Singleton




Dennis Singleton was born in SC in 1813 and died in 1884(per family record)
in Gwinnett Co., GA; he is buried in Singleton Cemetery.  He was in Reed
Company in the Creek Indian Wars of 1836 as was Thomas Jefferson
Singleton ( a brother?).  He was listed as Head of Household in 1840 Gwinnett
County (Pinckneyville) census, along with a 15-20 year-old female and two 5-10
males.  In the online 1850 census Dennis is written Dumas; he is next door to
Thomas Jefferson Singleton.

The property of Dennis was located in the Crooked Creek Road-Spalding Drive
area; one and one-half acres for Shiloh Baptist Church came from this property
in 1883.  Singleton Cemetery is located near the church on Spalding Drive
.

Dennis married Elizabeth Waits, daughter of Mark and Hannah Waits, originally
  of South Carolina. Their children were: (see 1850 & 1860 censuses)

  John M.   born 1845, died in Civil War, buried Singleton Cemetery* (Civil
  War files indicate death at Camp Douglas, IL.)
  Alford P. born 1847, CSA, died 1921; CSA-enlisted 1863 Co. H;  buried in
  Norcross (Gwinnett Co. GA) Town Cemetery; married Mary, daughter of  Luke
  Singleton; children were Sam, Lafayette, Mose, Dess, Mattie Utah, Marietta.
  Adaline E. born 1849, buried Singleton Cemetery*
  Julia Ann, born 1851, died 1875, buried Singleton Cemetery*

Dennis married Sarah Snow (1831-1911) in 1854; she is buried in Singleton Cemetery.
She was probably the daughter of George Washington Snow (son of Mark) and Narcissa
Webb (daughter of Clinton Webb of Milton Co., GA); l850 Cobb
 Co., GA, and 1860 Dale Co. AL, censuses have George and Narcissa Snow.

  Austen M. 1861-1944 married Emma Cowan, then Mary Chloe Harper;

  Sam Singleton;
  children from second: Hugh, Pearl, Johnny,Frank, Joe, Gertrude, Lou, Lois, and Winnie
  Sarah 1864-1894, not married, buried Singleton Cemetery
  Lou 1867-1935, no children, buried Singleton Cemetery
  Toccoa 1868-       , married John T.Scott in 1894, Milton Co., GA; buried  at Mt.
  Pisgah; children: Guy, Glenn, J. T., and George
    Eva (Evie) 1871-     , married Charlie (C. J.) Dalton in 1903 in Milton Co., GA;
  moved to Gadsden, AL area (maybe Albertville);children :Charlie, D. C. ,
  Bernice, Eula, and Paul George Washington 1876-1952; married Mary Magdalena
  Hawes 1876-1964 (daughter of Frances Parker 1849-1928 and Peyton    L. Hawes 1845-
  1920, both buried in Norcross Town Cemetery); George and Lena are buried in
  Singleton Cemetery.

Children of George and Lena:
  Edward Earl 1898-1972 buried Singleton Cemetery; no children
  Leila Ruth 1902?- 199l; married Olan Sparks; no  children Bess Evelyn 1906-7? married
  Jesse Harold Sellars; one child; Jesse buried in Singleton Cemetery
    Birdie Lou 1908-2001 married Robert Pruitt (Allen) two children; buried
    in Singleton Cemetery
    Mary June 1912-1998 married J. Otwell Kelley;  both buried in Singleton
        Cemetery;  two children.
    S. V. 1917-1977 married Joyce Anderson: one child

Note: there was a Waits Cemetery near Pinckneyville (Hwy 141.)
